Spend an afternoon painting en plein air with fellow MAA members at a pretty vineyard set among the rolling hillside of Central Maryland. Black Ankle Vineyards provides sweeping views of farmland, hills, a wide-stretching blue sky and rows of undulating grapevines. There’s a charming tasting room building and a patio with plants and flowers. And if our timing is right, we’ll catch a glimpse of fall colors.

Black Ankle Vineyards is the culmination of a long-time dream of founders Ed Boyce and Sarah O'Herron, who planted their first grapes in 2002 and opened for business in 2008. The vineyard was selected among the best 101 wineries in America in 2017.

During our outing, you are welcomed to walk around the property and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. The vineyard shop also sells cheeses, bread, spreads, salami and sweets; you can bring your own food, too. Wine tastings are available in the tasting room for an additional fee. And at 6 pm, the vineyard will have free live music on the patio for those who wish to stay. Parking is plentiful, and we’ll have open access to restrooms.

Cost: $10 for members, $16 non-members. Registration includes one glass of wine (or still or sparking water).

Time: We've set the outing for 2-6 pm. If you'd like more painting time, you can arrive earlier.

Getting There: The vineyard is at 14463 Black Ankle Rd in Mt. Airy, MD—a 50-minute drive from Rockville. See directions. We will meet at the vineyard. If you’d like to try to coordinate a carpool, or if you need a ride, please post a message on our members-only Facebook group.

Rain date: If the weather is poor, we’ll postpone until Saturday, October 19. Registrants will be contacted via email.
