Winter's Dance by kathy tynan

Theme for Submissions: Whispers of Winter. Whispers of Winter invites artists to explore the quiet beauty of the season—where light softens, colors deepen, and moments become more intimate. This show celebrates the subtle poetry of winter: the hush of snow, the curve of bare branches, the glow of gathering indoors. Together, these works reflect the gentle presence and contemplative spirit that winter brings.

Artists are asked to submit works that clearly relate to the theme Whispers of Winter, reflecting recognizable elements of the winter season -- such as seasonal color, atmosphere, subject matter, or mood.

Number of Artworks Allowed: MAA Members are invited to submit for consideration up to 2 artworks. Artists may submit work in any of the following categories:

Natural Landscapes, Maritime, and Seascapes

Cityscapes, Townscapes, Urbanscapes

Still Life

Abstract Art

Portraiture - People and Animals

Eligible Media: 2D works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, hand-pulled prints, drawing/ink mediums, textile, digital painting (read Digital Painting Requirements) and photography. 3D works are not included in this show.

Cost: There is no cost to submit your work to for consideration. If your artwork is selected by the curators, a fee of $10 will be required at the time of art drop off.

Process: Submitted artwork will be selected by the vineyard owners. Approximately 18 - 25 selected works will be exhibited for a three month period. All artwork must be for sale. Windridge will notify artists when work is sold. Windridge will provide payment to the artist, less a 20% commission.

Framing and Wiring Requirements ( MAA Framing & Wiring Requirements): All selected works must be framed, gallery wrapped or professionally finished, securely wired with hanging wire (no loops, sawtooth hangers). If submitting an unframed canvas, edge must be painted or finished to a professional level. No wet canvases will be accepted.

All accepted work must be exhibition-ready and deliverd to Windridge Vineyard Tasting Room on Monday, January 12, 10am-noon.

Replacement of Sold Artwork: Artists whose work is sold during the show period may contact the show manager or VP Shows to replace the sold work. Artists are not to contact the staff at Windridge Vineyard to replace artwork.

MAA is again delighted to return to the Oasis Art Gallery at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda.

Call to Artists - Where every artist chooses the work that speaks for them.

This exhibition welcomes art that reflects each artist’s individual vision, voice, and creative direction. With no formal theme for this show, we invite members to submit work that represents what they are most excited about right now — what they are exploring, refining, returning to, or newly discovering in their artistic practice.

Choose artworks that feel true to you: a piece that captures your current visual language, curiosity, or way of seeing the world. Strong submissions might highlight your signature style, a recent breakthrough, or a subject that continues to call you back.

Prospectus: Please refer to the SHOW PROSPECTUS for all show requirements.

Eligible media:

2D work: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, drawing/ink, encaustic, hand-pulled prints, fused glass, textile-fiber arts, digital painting, and photography

3D artwork: 3D artwork to include fused glass, mosaic, clay, wood and metal - must be wired for hanging on the wall with picture hooks.

Requirements: Your work must be between 9x12" and 28x28" framed and may not weigh more than 15 pounds.

Number of pieces allowed: One entry per member. There will be a total of 65 pieces in this show. Members can add a second artwork during registration which will be added to the show (in order of registration) if space is available. You will be contacted by the show manager if your second artwork is added to the show.

About Oasis: Washington Metropolitan Oasis and the Oasis Art Gallery are part of the national, non-profit Oasis education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and older through lifelong learning, health and wellness promotion and volunteer opportunities including Intergenerational Tutoring. Oasis brings people together to learn, lead, and contribute in their communities. Weekdays, the Oasis offices and Gallery are busy with Oasis class attendees, registrants, art lovers, as well as Macy’s shoppers.

Please join us at our next Open Studio gathering - a welcoming creative space designed for artists of all levels to gather, share, and grow together. All artists and art enthusiasts are welcome. Whether you’re a painter, sculptor, photographer, writer, or multidisciplinary creator, this is your time to immerse yourself in the joy of making art—side by side with a supportive community.

Open Studio is a casual, drop-in session to foster the 3Cs:

Artists will:

- Work on personal projects in a calm, inspiring environment

- Meet fellow creatives, exchange ideas, and spark new collaborations

Images above are all from DC. Rembrant's famous "The Mill",1645/1648, is housed in the National Gallery of Art, West Building, Main Floor - Gallery 48. What to expect: Once you have arrived, please check in with Lynn in front of the mill house. She will be wearing a straw hat. We will paint all morning and then gather around 10:30 to share our work, and get a group photo.

What to bring: Please bring your standard paints, substrate, easel, stool, medium, drop cloth, hand wipes, sun hat, bug spray, and water bottle. Please stay hydrated.

Getting there: If you'd like to try to find a ride or carpool with other participants, please post a note in our members-only Facebook group.

Parking: There is a small lot for parking to the left of Mill. Please carpool if possible. We are arriving early because of parking.

We are thrilled to announce that the Montgomery Art Association is hosting Mihira Karra's Fabric Collage Art Workshop in collaboration with the Oasis Art Gallery on Saturday, April 11!

No previous experience is required, all you need is a passion for color, texture and an openness to creativity, and originality! Mihira will teach fine fabric collage to create a landscape.

In this four-hour workshop, participants will learn how to view fabrics as a medium to create art; learn to pick fabrics for a particular landscape; how to stick fabric on canvas board; start their own landscapes; and take fabric and extra glue home to continue their artwork. An additional one-hour session would be available by zoom call for follow-up and help with completion of work.

Materials supplied by teacher- canvas boards, print of a landscape, brushes, Golden polymer medium glossy (for gluing) containers for the glue, fabric pieces.

What to Bring:

Fabric-cutting scissors
Snacks and drinks to keep you energized

Fee: $60 per MAA member registration fee and $15 for materials. $70 guest and non-MAA member registration fee and $15 for materials. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Workshop Instructor:

Mihira Karra is a fabric collage artist based in Vienna, Virginia. Originally from India, she developed her passion for portraiture early and now creates striking figurative work by sketching on canvas and "painting" with glued fabric pieces. Her fabric collages often weave stories through portraits that reflect her subjects' histories and interests. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post and prestigious juried shows including the American Craft Show in Baltimore, and is represented by Zenith Gallery in Washington DC.

Reaching for the Stars by Scott Suess

We are excited to announce the 4th Annual Spring Art Festival at Windridge Vineyard. This popular weekend-long event runs from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening and attracts visitors from across the region to enjoy fine art, wine, and the beautiful vineyard setting.

The Montgomery Art Association show will be held in the Wine Production Room, located just below the Tasting Room, and will serve as a featured part of Windridge’s Spring Festival activities. Windridge is planning additional festival elements throughout the weekend, including an artisan market, outdoor activities, and expanded visitor experiences designed to bring increased foot traffic to the art show and create a vibrant community event.

Show limit: 240 artworks

Eligibility: Open to all MAA members — this is not a juried show

Show Dates & Hours:

April 17, Friday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm

April 18, Saturday: 11:00am – 8:00pm

April 19, Sunday: 11:00am – 7:00pm

Theme: Artist Choice
Artwork does not need to be winery-related or Maryland-specific.

Eligible Media:

2D artworks: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, drawing/ink mediums, hand pulled prints, fused and blown glass, textile - fiber arts,digital painting, and photography. All 2 D work must be wired to hang on art panels. All 2D work must meet MAA framing and wiring requirements which can be found on the MAA website.
3D artworks: fused glass, mosaic, clay, wood, metal will be shown on pedestals or as floor display (unless submitted as 2D to be hung on panels).

Requirements:

Two Dimensional Work: We will accept 2D artwork up to 32" wide and 36" high (including frame) that will be displayed on art panels (see photo below). We will accept up to 3 larger works wider than 32" that will be displayed on sturdy easels. (Only 1 large work per artist.) There will be total of 220 panel hung works in the show.

Three Dimensional Work: We will be accepting 3D work for this show -- up to 15 sculpture pieces (including fused glass or mosaics, wood, metal, clay). Artwork will be displayed on pedestals, tables or floor.

Number of pieces allowed : MAA members are invited to submit:

2 artwork entries
Optional 3th artwork (to be included if space allows)

Volunteer Time Requirement: There is a volunteer requirement for this show. All participants are asked to sign up for one of the volunteer activities on the registration page. VOLUNTEER SIGN UP LINK.

Most activities are 2-3 hours in duration and involve being at the exhibit to answer questions and manage sales. Without the help of member volunteers it would be impossible to have this show...THANK YOU for Volunteering.

About this show: Our annual exhibition at Brookside Gardens is a mid-sized art show using the full gallery space within the visitors center.

Subject Requirements: MAA artists who are participating in the Brookside show are invited to submit up to 3 art prints that portray nature as their inspiration. Art for this show must reflect the close relationship with nature.

Registration of Prints (code required):

Artists must be registered in the Brookside Garden Where the Garden Meets Art prior to register prints.
Your show confirmation email contains a code to complete registration of prints.
Registration of prints will help MAA and Brookside Garden keep an accurate inventory of prints available for sale. All prints for sale must be registered.

Shared Bins: Brookside Garden is providing three shared bins for artists prints. Each artist can have up to three prints. We will have dividers with the artists' name on the divider.

Art Print Requirements:
- Artists can bring flat prints or flat originals, such as watercolors. All should be matted and have a back cardboard.
- Each item in the bin must be individually wrapped in clear plastic art and print bags. DickBlick Krystal seal self Sealing Art bags.
- Each item must have a label that has the Artist Name, Title of Work, Price.
- It is recommended that you include a business card inside the cellophane sleeve.

Sale of Prints: Brookside Garden will handle all sales and will take a 25% commission.

Registration dates: Registration starts Monday, April 6 and ends Monday April 20 at 11:59 pm ET, or earlier, if show capacity is reached.

Cost: There is no additional show fee to register art prints.

WHERE THE GARDENS MEET ART

Artist Subject Requirement & Theme Interpretation

Artwork submitted for this exhibition should have nature as its primary focus, reflecting the horticultural setting and mission of Brookside Gardens. Subject matter should be clearly connected to the natural world—gardens, plants, landscapes, or nature-inspired forms.

Where the Gardens Meet Art explores the rich intersection between nature and creative expression. Artists are invited to draw inspiration from the gardens—through direct observation or personal interpretation—capturing the color, structure, movement, and seasonal rhythms found in the natural environment.

From blooming forms and layered greenery to shifting light and intimate details, this theme encourages artists to look closely and respond creatively. Work may be representational or interpretive, but should remain grounded in nature as the central source of inspiration.

Number of Artworks Allowed: MAA members are invited to submit one artwork with an optional second.

Eligible Media: 2D artworks: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, drawing/ink, photography, hand pulled prints, textile fiber art and digital paintings. 3D works are not included in this show. All work must be consistent with the subject requirement & theme. W
all hung work must be no larger than 28"x28".

Note Registration of Art Prints (code required): This show will include art prints to be displayed in 3 shared bins. There is a separate art print registration is required for prints at Art Prints - Brookside Garden Show. To complete registration of art prints a code will be emailed to you as part of your registration confirmation of original 2D. You will need this code in order to complete registration of prints.

Show Labels: Show labels will be generated from the artists' registration information. There will be no changes to label information after April 21st . If you need a change to your registration - labels, contact the show managers before April 21st.

Framing Requirements: All 2D artwork must meet MAA framing and wiring standards -- MAA Framing Requirements .

Show Limit: 70 for 2D work.

Additional Second Entry: For 2D may be registered if space is available. The second work will be added in order of registration. The show manager will notify members at close of registration regarding inclusion of a second entry.

Registration dates: Registration opens Monday April 6 and ends Monday, April 20th at 11:59 pm ET, or earlier, if show capacity is reached.

Cost: There is a $10 (nonrefundable) show fee to be paid at the time of registration. There is a 25% commission charged by Brookside Garden on all sold art.

Please join us for a morning of SPRING PLEIN AIR PAINTING on Sunday, May 24 from 9am -12pm at the vast historic Montgomery Agricultural Farm in Derwood, Maryland.

Grant Wood painted in rural Iowa in the 1930's during the Great Depression when many Americans felt oppressed and longed for simpler times. We can see what a farm looked like in the 1930's in Montgomery County here at the Agricultural History Farm Park which centers on the Magruder-Bussard farmstead, a well-preserved example of an early 20th-century farm. Location: 18400 Muncaster Road, Derwood, MD 20855

This scenic 455-acre park features rolling hills, open fields, an apple orchard, a variety of farm animals, and test gardens for the Dahlia Society. There are barns to paint, a historic farm house and other structures in this rural landscape. The main barn here was built in 1898 by the Bussard family and features distinctive elements such as square louvered windows, German siding, a stone foundation, and a half open fore-bay, which were common in the regions agricultural structures at the time. The mission of this agricultural farm is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the 1960s.

Number of registrants: Up to 30 members and their guests (Members may bring 1 guest.)

What to expect: Once you have arrived, please check in with Lynn in front of the farm house. She will be wearing a straw hat. We will paint all morning and then gather around 11:30 to share our work and take a group photo.

What to bring: Please bring your standard paints, substrate, easel, stool, medium, drop cloth, hand wipes, sun hat, bug spray, and water bottle. Please stay hydrated.

Getting there: If you'd like to try to find a ride or carpool with other participants, please post a note in our members-only Facebook group.

Parking: The entrance to the farm park is located on Muncaster Road, marked by a brown wooden sign. To reach the historic buildings, turn right onto the gravel road at the first junction. Parking is available in the grass field in front of the farmhouse, accessible through an opening in the wooden fence on the right. Please avoid parking near the historic buildings, as it can disrupt the visitor experience.

Photos: A photo permit is not required if photos are personal mementos of your attendance.

Eligible Media: 2D works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, hand-pulled prints, drawing/ink mediums, textile, digital painting (read Digital Painting Requirements) and photography. 3D works are not included in this show.

Cost: There is no cost to submit your work to for consideration. If your artwork is selected by the curators, a fee of $10 will be required at the time of art drop off.

Process: Submitted artwork will be selected by the vineyard owners. Approximately 18 - 25 selected works will be exhibited for a three month period. All artwork must be for sale. Windridge will notify artists when work is sold. Windridge will provide payment to the artist, less a 20% commission.

Framing and Wiring Requirements ( MAA Framing & Wiring Requirements): All selected works must be framed, gallery wrapped or professionally finished, securely wired with hanging wire (no loops, sawtooth hangers). If submitting an unframed canvas, edge must be painted or finished to a professional level. No wet canvases will be accepted.

All accepted work must be exhibition-ready and deliverd to Windridge Vineyard Tasting Room on Monday, tbd 10am-noon.

Replacement of Sold Artwork: Artists whose work is sold during the show period may contact the show manager or VP Shows to replace the sold work. Artists are not to contact the staff at Windridge Vineyard to replace artwork.

Theme Interpretation

What happens when you slow down and really look?

A Closer Look invites artists to explore observation, detail, and perspective. This theme encourages work that reveals something more through careful attention—where composition, light, texture, and point of view play a central role.

Sometimes that means focusing in—on a face, a surface, a fragment, or a moment.Other times it means looking beyond first impressions—discovering structure, pattern, or meaning that becomes clearer ov

er time. Work may draw the viewer in through intimacy, layering, or the accumulation of detail, inviting a deeper and more sustained engagement.

Rather than focusing on subject alone, artists are encouraged to consider how their work rewards attention—what is revealed as the viewer spends more time with it.

Jury Considerations

Submissions will be evaluated on overall quality, including composition, technique, and originality. The juror will also consider how clearly and thoughtfully each work engages with the theme, A Closer Look.

MAA is pleased to be co-hosting, in conjunction with Bender Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Washington Goldman Art Gallery in Rockville, a new exhibition and sale entitled Afterglow.

Theme: Afterglow

Afterglow explores what remains after a moment of intensity—how light, color, and atmosphere continue to shift and resonate.

Artists are encouraged to move beyond literal interpretations and consider how energy is carried through a work—whether through color, contrast, surface, or composition. This may be expressed through landscape, interior, figure, or abstract approaches.

Successful work will demonstrate a clear and intentional use of light and color to create a sense of presence that extends beyond the immediate moment.

Eligible Media:

2D artwork: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel, encaustic, drawing/ink mediums, hand-pulled prints, fused glass, textile-fiber arts, digital painting (read Digital Painting Requirements), and photography. All 2D artwork must meet MAA framing requirements and wiring standards. See framing guidance FRAMING GUIDANCE.

3D artwork: Fused glass, mosaic, clay, wood and/or metal. Sculpture work will be displayed on pedestals or elevated spaces. (up to 6 total pieces).

Membership: You must be a Montgomery Art Association member in good standing to enter this show.

Number of Works and Sizes: Allowed: MAA members are invited to submit:

Two Dimensional Artwork: 1 artwork entry per member. We will accept 8 works that are up to 48" (that could be a 24x48" or a 48x48") and 55 smaller works of various sizes not to exceed 32" on any side. The gallery will accommodate approximately 63 wall artworks in total.
Three Dimensional Artwork: 1 artwork in 3D sculpture category per member. A total of six 3D sculptures will be accepted in this show. 3D work will be displayed on pedestals or larger sculpture can be shown as a floor piece.
Optional 2nd artwork in either 2D or 3D: Members may register a second work, which will be added to the show in order of registration if space is available. The show manager will notify members whose second work is accepted soon after registration closes.

Show Fee: $10 per member (nonrefundable).
