Field Trip: Baltimore Museum of Art Special Exhibit
Amy Sherald: American Sublime
Self-Guided Tour
(new time, group rate)
The Montgomery Art Association invites members to a self-guided visit to Amy Sherald: American Sublime, a major exhibition by one of the most significant contemporary American portrait artists working today. Amy Sherald is best known for her groundbreaking official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, a work that reshaped public expectations of portraiture and representation in American art. (shown here is "As Soft As She Is...")
Sherald’s portraits, distinguished by grisaille (gray-toned skin), vibrant color, and composed stillness, center everyday individuals and elevate them with dignity, presence, and quiet power. Her work challenges traditional narratives of race, identity, and visibility, making portraiture a space of inclusion and re-imagining.
Participants will explore the exhibition at their own pace, with time to reflect, take notes, sketch, and discuss key works. The self-guided format (using QR codes that link to recordings of the artist, models, and curator) encourages close looking and personal engagement with Sherald’s artistic vision and cultural impact.
